50-5-31
This book was a gift to each crew member and officer of the submarine. Phil Wagner donated 154 softbound books. The City of Springfield purchased 46 and hardbound 200.
The cover shows Lincoln in the spring of 1849 on the lawn of the State Capitol in Springfield. Lincoln demonstrates his boat model, which is fitted with a system of bellows he had invented. On May 22, 1849, Patent No. 6469 was issued to Abraham Lincoln for this invention, and the principle is still used on today's submarines. It is in navy blue, with a book plate in each book to designate the occasion January 9, 1993 for the launching of the U.S. nuclear submarine. Phil Wagner was on the Mayor's committee.
The back of the book shows the Old State Capitol, Lincoln Depot, Lincoln Home, Lincoln's Tomb and Lincoln the Surveyor, along with a map of the Lincoln Heritage Trail.
