Lawyer Lincoln defending Colonel Matthew Rogers.
Description:
Judge at bench, Colonel Matthew Rogers in witness chair
with Lincoln standing. The editor of the Springfield Register purchased
the Colonel Matthew Rogers Building in Athens, Illinois and failed
to make his payments. Lawyer Lincoln successfully defended Colonel
Rogers, who got his building back. The Colonel Rogers family were
very close friends of Abraham Lincoln. Colonel Rogers and his son,
Henry, were the 1st and 2nd postmasters in Athens, Illinois at the
time Lincoln was postmaster at New Salem. During times of high waters
on the Sangamon River, Postmaster Lincoln would have to go to Athens
and pick up the New Salem mail. Researched by Dr. Wayne Temple.
