Subject:
Lincoln borrows a horse for 1836 State Representative campaign.
Description:
Lincoln borrows a horse from Mrs. Robert L. Wilson. (Her husband
and Lincoln campaigned together in Sangamon County. Wilson was from
Athens, Illinois, 7 miles from New Salem. Her maiden name was Liza
Kincaid. Lincoln surveyed the farms of two of her brothers.)
Lincoln's
horse was stolen, so he had no transportation at the time. Liza
Wilson's husband was a member of the Long Nine legislators and Lincoln
made him a paymaster during the Civil War. (Phil Wagner has two
of his paymaster books in his Wagner~Lincoln collection. He also
has a picture of Mrs. Wilson in the Kincaid family picture, and
one on their front porch in Sterling, Illinois.) Researched by Dr.
Wayne Temple.
