Subject: Young Lincoln building a flat boat

Description: Young Lincoln supervising the construction of a flat boat in April 1831 at Sangamo Town on the Sangamon River, preparing for his trip to New Orleans. Sangamo Town is northwest of Springfield. Among the workmen building the flat boat with young Abe were John D. Johnston, John Hanks and John E. Roll. Denton Offutt was the owner of the finished flat boat. (Hand-written description by artist on the back of the positive)
